Severe Weather

The weather in Northeast Ohio is very unpredictable. Although we have a page dedicated solely for what to do for tornado watches and warnings (Severe Weather – Tornado – Emergency Management), it is important to plan ahead for other weather-related issues.

In the event of severe weather, Emergency Management and/or Campus Safety will send messaging via the college’s emergency notification system (if you still need to sign-up for the text alerts, visit the links below). You can also be prepared ahead of the storm by checking weather apps or websites, watching the Akron/Cleveland-area news stations, or listening to weather on our local radio stations.

Thunderstorms

  • Severe Thunderstorm Watch means severe thunderstorms are possible in our area.
  • Severe Thunderstorm Warning means a severe thunderstorm is imminent or has been indicated by radar or reported by storm spotters.

Snow

In Ohio, county sheriffs, pursuant to Ohio Revised Code, may declare a snow emergency and temporarily close state routes and municipal streets within their jurisdiction when action is reasonably necessary for the prevention of public peace. The following are definitions of the levels of snow emergencies as provided by the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. Emergency Snow Levels | Wayne County Sheriff’s Office

LEVEL 1 ALERT

Roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Roads are also icy. Drive very cautiously.

LEVEL 2 ALERT

Roadways are hazardous with blowing and drifting snow. Only those who feel it is necessary to drive should be out on the roadways. Contact your employer to see if you should report to work.

LEVEL 3 ALERT

ALL roadways are closed to non-emergency personnel. No one should be out during these conditions unless it is absolutely necessary to travel. All employees should contact their employer to see if they should report to work. Those traveling may subject themselves to arrest under 2917.13 of the Ohio Revised Code. This offense is a misdemeanor of the fourth degree.
