  • My favorite story about being abroad: Long ago I was standing shoulder to shoulder with South Koreans in a bus headed for the Gyeongju Historic Area near Busan. It promised to be a long, hot ride to this open air museum with, seemingly, half the population of the city crammed in the bus with me. Then a baby being held by her mother began to scream. Loudly. The mother tried to cajole the baby by bouncing her on her hip, all while maneuvering to stay afoot as the bus jerked back and forth on the crowded roadways. It wasn’t working and the screaming continued for perhaps five minutes. Suddenly the baby locked eyes with me. Immediately the crying stopped and the eyes widened. Perhaps the baby had never seen a white person? Timidly she reached out her hand to very gently pat my curly hair. She smiled, popped her thumb into her mouth, and was quiet. My fellow riders and I breathed a long, slow sigh of relief, and then the bobbing of heads began, everyone silently thanking me for being different enough to interest the baby, who was now sound asleep on her mother’s shoulder.
