{"id":74,"date":"2021-04-27T22:08:10","date_gmt":"2021-04-27T22:08:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inside.wooster.edu\/health\/?page_id=74"},"modified":"2021-07-15T14:54:26","modified_gmt":"2021-07-15T14:54:26","slug":"suicide","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/inside.wooster.edu\/health\/counseling\/suicide\/","title":{"rendered":"What to do if you suspect a friend or loved one is suicidal?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Take it seriously.<\/strong>&nbsp; Up to 70% of all people who commit suicide give some warning of their intentions to a friend or member of their family.<\/li><li><strong>Be willing to listen.<\/strong>&nbsp;Even if profession help is needed, your friend or loved one will be more willing to seek help if you have listened to him or her.<\/li><li><strong>Voice your concern.<\/strong>&nbsp;Take the initiative to ask what is troubling your friend or loved one, and attempt to overcome any reluctance on their part to talk about it.<\/li><li><strong>Let the person know that you care.<\/strong>&nbsp;Reassure your friend or loved one that he or she is not alone. Explain that, although powerful, suicidal feelings are temporary, depression can be treated, and problems can be solved.<\/li><li><strong>Ask if the person has a specific plan<\/strong>&nbsp;for committing suicide, and how far he or she has gone in carrying it out. (Asking about suicide does not cause a person to think about \u2013 or commit- suicide. This is a myth.)<\/li><li><strong>Get professional help immediately.<\/strong>&nbsp;Your friend will be more likely to seek help if you accompany him or her. If all else fails, notify security, who are trained to handle situations like this.<\/li><li><strong>Follow up on treatment.<\/strong>&nbsp;Take an active role in following up with the process.<\/li><li>If for any reason you are unsure, uncomfortable, or unable to action: Find someone with whom to share your concerns.<br><\/li><li>Don\u2019t assume the situation will take care of itself<\/li><li>Don\u2019t leave a person alone.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t be sworn to secrecy.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t act shocked or surprised at what the person says.<\/li><li>Don\u2019t challenge or dare<\/li><li>Don\u2019t argue or debate moral issues.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Other ways as a community that can be helpful to each other is not using this type of terminology (suicidal ideation or threats) in a flippant or minimizing way. Be mindful of the impact of words and expressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have immediate concerns, bring your friend to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wooster.edu\/offices\/health\/counseling\/\">LSWC<\/a>&nbsp;or call&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wooster.edu\/offices\/security\/\">Security and Protective Services<\/a>&nbsp;330-263-2590.
