All non-immigrants in the U.S. are required to file a tax return \u2013&nbsp;<em>even if you did not earn any taxable income<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Income is taxed by the federal, state, and local governments. Some wages are also taxed for Social Security and Medicare benefits \u2013 though a non-resident taxpayer may be exempt from these. Be sure to check our&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/inside.wooster.edu\/iss\/taxes\/faq\/\">Non-Resident Taxes FAQ<\/a>&nbsp;for information about tax treaties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tax year runs from January 1 \u2013 December 31. Annual Tax Returns (regarding income from the previous year) are due April 15<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why File a Tax Return?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stay tax compliant:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Failing to file may impact the status of your current visa and make future U.S. visa applications difficult.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Avoid penalties:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>If you miss the deadline, you may face late filing penalties \u2013 filing prior to the deadline prevents this.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">You may be owed a tax refund:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Most international students filing a tax return are due a tax refund for overpaid tax. Sprintax will help you file a timely and accurate return to avoid IRS penalties and fines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">To get started:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Register here<\/li><li>Answer some easy questions<\/li><li>Sprintax will do the calculations and prepare your tax return(s)<\/li><li>You print out the forms, sign them, and send them to the tax authorities<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a look at these simple step-by-step&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"http:\/\/inside.wooster.edu\/iss\/regulations\/Taxes\/Sprintax%20instructions-%20The%20College%20of%20Wooster.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Sprintax instructions<\/a> to start the tax return process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What You May Need<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to have the following with you when you prepare your taxes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Passport or other valid photo ID<\/li><li>U.S. entry and exit dates for current and all other past visits to the U.S.<\/li><li>All tax forms (including W-2, 1042-S, and\/or 1099, if you received them)<\/li><li>Visa\/immigration status information, including I-20 for F-1 students or DS-2019 for J-1 visitors<\/li><li>Social Security Number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN). To ensure you received the required W-2 if you worked at The College of Wooster in the previous tax year, be sure the Business Office has your most current U.S. address. If you do not receive your W-2, contact Human Resources for an electronic copy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">\u2018Residency for Tax Purposes\u2019 (You\u2019ve Lived in the U.S. for 5 Years or More)<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensure you complete the forms correctly, you must first determine your \u2018residency for tax purposes.\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Residency for immigration purposes is different than residency for tax purposes. Residency for tax purposes is establish<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ed by taking the \u201csubstantial presence test\u201d in&nbsp;<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.irs.gov\/pub\/irs-pdf\/p519.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">IRS Publication 519<\/a>&nbsp;.&nbsp;<strong>If you use Sprintax Tax Prep, the program takes you through this \u201csubstantial presence test\u201d as a first step.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Material on this website is general and for informational purposes only.
