SUMMARY:Stories with Dr. Kevin Cordi
DESCRIPTION:Join storyteller Kevin Cordi for an evening of tales with themes drawn from Lake Valley on view now at the College of Wooster Art Museum.  \n\n\n\nKevin shares stories with a highly energetic\, animated and interactive style and is considered by many storytelling professionals as one of the most influential and dynamic storytellers and teachers today.  His award-winning story work has been commissioned by The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts\, American Library Association\, National Storytelling Network\, Newsweek\, and the Qatar Foundation International.    \n\n\n\nPresented in connection with the CWAM exhibition Lake Valley by Rachel Rose\, on view through May 14. Lake Valley presents an immersive\, fantastical\, and colorful world that explores human fears and desires around tedium\, adventure\, abandonment\, and longing for companionship. Ignored on a lonely day\, an imagined pet leaves its family’s suburban home to look for friendship in an ethereal storybook landscape. Exhibition on loan and programs sponsored by Art Bridges.  \n\n\n\nDr. Kevin Cordi traverses around the country and world reminding others that there is rich value in play. His work has been modeled in schools and storytelling organizations around the country. He has been a gas station attendant\, grill cook\, door-to-door salesperson\, and a bus boy. All of this has helped him want to be involved in play more. Whether he is working with a teenager to mix a fairytale\, listening to a whole company to tell their story of their business better\, or performing for a crowd of 1000\, he uses play because this is where the true work is found in story crafting.

SUMMARY:Spring Exhibitions Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a celebration of our spring exhibitions—this is the last week for Essential Matter and the opening week of Lake Valley by Rachel Rose. Short gallery talk at 4:15 pm\, followed by viewing and discussion of Lake Valley.  \n\n\n\nThe artists in both exhibitions have strategically sourced and transformed the materials from which their work was made. In each case\, the meaning of the artwork hinges on this process—none of them could be composed from wholly new materials. The works allude to the original purpose of their materials as their fundamental characteristics carry through into new creations.

SUMMARY:Rachel Rose: Lake Valley
DESCRIPTION:Balancing notions of tedium\, adventure\, abandonment\, and companionship\, Lake Valley presents a colorful world of fantastic visuals and familiar emotions to tell the story of a pet that leaves its family’s suburban home to look for friendship in an ethereal landscape.   \n\n\n\nRachel Rose creates video artworks inventively combining collage\, found footage\, and repurposed materials. This work emerged from the artist’s research into historical understandings of childhood and her discovery that many narratives written for children involve themes of abandonment and loneliness.  \n\n\n\nTo create the textured layers of Lake Valley\, she gathered thousands of images from nineteenth and twentieth century children’s books and used them in unexpected ways to compose the frames of digitally painted cel animation.   \n\n\n\nThe sound editing of Lake Valley is similarly unexpected as actions are accompanied by recognizable but strange noises. These moments of discordance and the shifting\, hypnotic visuals subtly emphasize the disorientation of being lost and alone.   \n\n\n\nAs a result\, Lake Valley presents a sumptuous and transfixing storybook world that explores universal human fears and desires.

SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Petra Soesemann
DESCRIPTION:Interested in human perception and the working of the mind\, Petra Soesemann creates work that is fundamentally concerned with the manipulation of the formal qualities of art (color\, texture\, form\, structure\, pattern\, geometry\, and rhythm\, among other factors). She watches for the ways these come together in what she calls “the visual event\,” a moment when the formal qualities of a work converge in a way that seems almost magical to hold the viewer’s attention without being predictable.  \n\n\n\nSoesemann lives and works in Wooster\, Ohio\, after teaching and serving as the chair of the foundations program at the Cleveland Art Institute.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nEbert Art Center Room 223
