The Department offers several recital opportunities to help you develop as a performer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Departmental Recitals<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Departmental recitals provide performance opportunities in a supportive environment. They are open to all students currently taking applied lessons with teacher approval.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>There are about 6 recitals per semester, typically held Tuesdays\/Thursdays 11:00\u2013noon<ul><li>Minimum of 20 minutes total music required for the recital to proceed<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To perform, submit an entry form to Departmental Recital Coordinator by the deadline that appears on the form for your intended recital date.<ul><li>Include accurate timings for all pieces<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Check in with the Head Usher before recital<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Recordings of departmental recitals are archived. You may obtain a copy of your performance from the Recording Crew Chief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Half and Full Recitals<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Recitals are required for the following degrees:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>B.A. (performance emphasis)\/B.M. Performance\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Half recital (Junior I.S.) and full recital (Senior I.S.).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>B.M.E.\/B.M.T.\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Half recital in junior or senior year (may be full with permission from Chair).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Optional recitals may be given by any student in applied lessons who fulfill the prerequisites given below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Time Requirements<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Half recital: 25\u201330 minutes of music<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Full recital: 45+ minutes of music<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Prerequisites<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Before presenting a recital, you must:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Perform on at least two departmental recitals on the same instrument\/voice\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Composers need to have works performed on at least two departmental recitals.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pass a pre-recital jury (see below)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some recitals have additional requirements:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>B.A.\/B.M. with vocal performance emphasis and B.M.E. giving degree recital in voice must demonstrate singing proficiency in at least two modern non-English languages before the senior\/degree recital.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>For optional recitals, you must also submit a written request to the Chair with<ul><li>Documentation of departmental recital performances and your applied teacher&#8217;s endorsement<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For optional \u00a0full recitals, provide documentation of a previous half recital.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Scheduling<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>To schedule a recital, email the Administrative Coordinator beginning June 15<sup>th<\/sup> of the summer prior to the recital.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Optional recitals are not allowed after spring break.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you are giving a half recital, please work with another performer to create a shared full recital.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seniors seeking consideration for the Pi Kappa Lambda Performance Prize should either give their recital or submit to the Department a recording of a jury performance by April 1<sup>st<\/sup>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Pre-Recital Jury<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The pre-recital jury ensures that your repertoire is ready for public performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Scheduling is arranged by your applied teacher<ul><li>Must be at least 3 weeks before the recital<ul><li>If the three-week mark falls on a weekend, during fall break, or during the second week of spring break, then the jury may take place on the following Monday.<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>If the three-week mark falls during the first week of spring break, then the jury should precede spring break.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Only one jury will be heard for each proposed recital date.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Perform your entire recital program for three jurors<ul><li>If performance meets\/exceeds recital standards, then the recital approved.<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If standards are not met, your recital must be rescheduled with a new jury for the new date.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Other Recital Logistics<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Program<ul><li>You may only perform pieces\/recordings approved at your pre-recital jury.<ul><li>You may omit pieces after the jury but cannot add new pieces<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Submit complete program information within one week of passing your pre-recital jury.<\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Intermissions are discouraged<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recordings\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All students giving departmentally approved recitals receive a free recording.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Receptions\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Receptions must be arranged through the Administrative Coordinator (you are responsible for setup and cleanup).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Senior Music Hour<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A special departmental recital celebrating graduating seniors is held during Commencement weekend. You\u2019re encouraged to participate if you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Secure the recommendation of your applied teacher<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Have performed on at least 2 departmental recitals<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If selected, you may perform one piece under 5 minutes.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Public performance is part of musical training.
