{"id":661,"date":"2026-02-05T19:11:53","date_gmt":"2026-02-06T00:11:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/inside.wooster.edu\/music\/?page_id=661"},"modified":"2026-03-14T12:06:33","modified_gmt":"2026-03-14T16:06:33","slug":"applied-music-lessons","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/inside.wooster.edu\/music\/applied-music-lessons\/","title":{"rendered":"Applied Music Lessons"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Any student may study voice, composition, or an instrument for which we offer private instruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Vocal and Instrumental Lessons<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Private lessons are available at three levels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>100-level: half-hour lessons (.5 credits)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>200-level: hour lessons (1 credit)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>300-level: advanced instruction, either half-hour (.5 credits; course number ends in 0) or hour (1 credit; course number ends in 1)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Students typically begin at the 100-level and advance in consultation with the primary teacher. Entrance to advanced instruction is by audition, usually an end-of-semester jury.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Lesson Fee Policy<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/catalog.wooster.edu\/content.php?catoid=12&amp;navoid=310#expenses\">The College charges a fee<\/a> for vocal and instrumental lessons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Standard lesson fees: $780 (half-hour) \/ $1,560 (hour) per semester<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reduced lesson fees: $30 (half-hour) \/ &nbsp;$60 (hour) per semester for:<ul><li>Declared Music majors<\/li><\/ul><ul><li>Music Scholarship recipients (on scholarship instrument)<\/li><\/ul>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Ensemble Lesson Scholarship holders<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You may declare a B.A. in Music to access reduced fees while exploring your options. You can also contact the Chair or any major ensemble director for more information about ensemble lesson scholarships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>End-of-Semester Juries<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Juries are the final exam for your applied lesson. During finals week, you will perform a substantial portion of your semester\u2019s work for faculty evaluation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Duration<\/strong>: 10 minutes (half-hour lessons) \/ 20 minutes (hour lessons)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Grading<\/strong>: typically 15\u201330% of final grade; written evaluations kept in departmental files for majors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exemptions<\/strong> (unless teacher requires otherwise): students auditing lessons, complete beginners in the applied area, and those who already performed a recital jury that semester on the same instrument<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Additional Lesson Requirements<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All students are expected to discuss their plans for any public performance with their applied teacher before the event.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>All prospective voice students must demonstrate the ability to read music.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>B.A. and B.M. students with an emphasis in violin performance must complete .5 credits in viola lessons.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Practice Expectations<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Your weekly practice commitment includes score study, memorization, textual analysis, and the like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Half-hour lessons: 9 hours of practice per week<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hour lessons: 18 hours of practice per week plus one Departmental Recital performance per semester<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Make-Up Lessons<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Make-ups are offered for<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Lessons canceled by the teacher<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Student absences due to illness and with advance notice (24 hours when possible)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Check your syllabus for specific policies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Enrollment Priority<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>In rare cases when teaching loads require limiting enrollment in lessons, we prioritize:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Music majors and Music Scholarship holders (on their primary voice\/instrument)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other Music majors<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students continuing with the same instructor<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Large-ensemble members (on their ensemble voice\/instrument)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Other students taking lessons for credit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Students wishing to audit lessons<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a>Composition Lessons<\/a><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Both acoustic and electronic composition are available at two levels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>200-level: half-hour lessons (.5 credits)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>300-level: hour lessons (1 credit)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Students typically begin at the 200-level and advance in consultation with the primary teacher.
