In September of 1925, the Wooster Voice newspaper proclaimed the formation of a Phi Beta Kappa Chapter at the college.  Wooster had now entered \u201cthe circle of the elite.\u201d  The College\u2019s chapter, christened \u201cKappa of Ohio,\u201d was only the tenth Chapter established in this state.  Its early leadership included members who are now legendary figures in Wooster\u2019s past: Professors Kelso (Greek), Notestein (Latin), Compton (Philosophy), Mateer (Biology), and Gingrich (German).  At the first initiation, many alumni members and six seniors were elected.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Kappa of Ohio chapter of Phi Beta Kappa contributes to the intellectual life of the College of Wooster in many ways.\u00a0 Since 1930 the Chapter has sponsored visiting lecturers and now participates in the Visiting Scholars<\/a> program including hosting, in collaboration with academic departments, several scholars on campus<\/a>.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our Chapter members are listed on our Membership page<\/a>. These members include Members in Course who are Wooster students inducted into the chapter as well as Wooster faculty, staff, and emeriti who are associate or affiliate members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Phi Beta Kappa Prize<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Since 1976, the Chapter has awarded a Phi Beta Kappa Prize given to the junior initiate who has demonstrated concern for the quality of life on campus, leadership ability, and a broad range of course work.\u00a0 The 2025 Phi Beta Kappa Prize was given to Frances “Frankie” Zoe Readshaw.
