Kernodle as part of the Visiting Scholars program, which provides PBK campuses with the chance to engage with some of the country\u2019s most distinguished scholars.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Campus Events<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Dr. Kernodle&#8217;s schedule will include 2 opportunities open to the campus community on Monday, February 24th:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy Song is My Weapon: Women, Social Movements, and the Act of Freedom Singing\u201d&nbsp;<br>Mon. Feb. 24, <strong>9:00am<\/strong>, Andrews Library CoRE Cube<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The campus community is invited to a special meeting of Introduction to Africana Studies, where Professor Kernodle will present a guest lecture exploring how women musicians from various ethnic\/racial backgrounds created and used music as a means of advancing social change, promoting social movements, and mass-mobilizing their communities.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAll Rhythm, but None of the Blues\u201d&nbsp;<br>Mon. Feb. 24, <strong>6:00pm<\/strong>, Lean Lecture Hall<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This lecture looks at key events from the past several years as a lens to understand the current wave of protest and socially conscious music. It will specifically focus on the music and cultural responses of black women as a method of illuminating the long and varied history of black women musicians in shaping and promoting a public rhetoric of social change.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">About Dr. Kernodle<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tammy L. Kernodle is University Distinguished Professor of Music at Miami University in Oxford, OH. She is the author of the biography\u202f<em>Soul on Soul: The Life and Music of Mary Lou Williams<\/em>, which chronicles the six-decade career of jazz pianist\/arranger and educator Mary Lou Williams. \u202f Her scholarship has appeared in numerous journals and anthologies, and she has appeared in numerous award-winning documentaries including\u202f<em>Mary Lou Williams: The Lady Who Swings the Band, Girls in the Band<\/em>, and\u202f<em>Miles Davis: The Birth of Cool<\/em>.\u202fDr. Kernodle has written for and consulted with The American Jazz Museum, National Museum of African American History and Culture, Walker Art Center, NPR, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, BBC, and Carnegie Hall. She currently serves as Curator of the I Dream a World Festival, multi-year initiative with New World Symphony that celebrates the legacy of the Harlem Renaissance.
