In collaboration with the departments of Music and Africana Studies, the College of Wooster\u2019s chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was delighted to host Dr. Tammy L. Kernodle as part of Phi Beta Kappa’s Visiting Scholar Program<\/a>. Dr. Kernodle is the University Distinguished Professor of Music at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Kernodle engaged with our campus community in multiple events over a two-day period February 24-25, 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Kernodle presented a public lecture in Lean Lecture Hall entitled, \u201cAll Rhythm, But None of the Blues,\u201d\u00a0where she explored key events from the past several years as a lens to understand the current wave of protest and socially conscious music.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Kernodle spent time with two classes. Her first visit was a special meeting of Dr. Miriam\u00a0Kilimo’s Introduction to Africana Studies<\/em> class that welcomed students from beyond the course and explored the topic, \u201cMy Song is My Weapon: Women, Social Movements, and the Act of Freedom Singing.\u201d\u00a0Another class visit involved Dr. Tim Freeze’s Soundscapes<\/em> course and the topic of \u201cWho Runs the World?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, Dr. Kernodle was gracious in spending her time with faculty and staff. She offered a Professional Development Lunch, in coordination with Academic Affairs, where she facilitated rich discussion on the topic of “Keeping our Eyes on the Prize.” <\/p>\n\n\n\n
