The Social Entrepreneurship (SE) program is a solutions-based experiential learning program. Since it began in 2005, the program has recruited student teams from across the college to work with over 40 community and social change organizations. Recognized for excellence by the Institute of International Education, it is also one of the earliest examples of social entrepreneurship programs at liberal arts colleges.
An example of a successful project is Foxfield Preserve, which supports The Wilderness Center (TWC) in Wilmot Ohio. Students developed a proposal for a “green cemetery” that “provides an economical, environmentally friendly alternative burial.” Like other Wooster SE business plans, this service furthers the social mission of the organization while also providing a sustainable source of revenue. In fact, the former TWC Executive Director Gordon Maupin reported that the green cemetery was one of the few revenue-generating operations helping to support the organization during the economic downturn. It continues to raise more than $100,000 in revenue a year! Another example is the corporate sponsorship model for the Viola Startzman Free Clinic (VSFC) that is used to this day to sustain operations. VSFC, provides basic medical and dental services to low-income families. It is the only free clinic in Wayne County.

The Social Entrepreneurship program recruits students for mentored community based projects. Students obtain academic credit for the (internship) experience that coincides with the spring or fall semesters. Participation in the program counts towards the Entrepreneurship Pathway.
