Job Description:

The Academic Resource Center Language Peer Tutor Position will assist students with grammar, writing, reading, listening, and speaking skills, in addition to basic study skills, time management, test preparation, and coursework evaluation. They will have a high level of responsibility and professionalism. They will be entrusted to keep students’ coursework, homework, exams, and progress in the course confidential. They will be expected to report all violations of the Wooster Ethic and Scot’s Key to the Academic Resource Center Staff who will make the necessary contacts on campus.

Subjects: Biology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Chemistry, Economics, Environmental Studies, Neuroscience, Physics, and Psychology

*Math Tutors are requested through the department and for all other subjects, see the Professor or Department Chair

Duties and Responsibilities (may include the following, but not be limited to):

Scheduling:

  • Peer Tutors will be expected to commit to a minimum of 4 hours per week
  • Hired Tutors will be able to create their own work schedule based on availability each semester
  • Tutors will need to check email regularly to view and prepare for scheduled tutor sessions

Training:

  • New Peer Tutors will be expected to attend a minimum of 4 training sessions and complete bookwork and reading in relation to the session topic.
  • All Tutors are expected to complete a total of 8 paid- training hours during their first semester as a peer tutors.
  • Language Peer Tutors may be expected to participate in additional language-specific tutor training activities.

Requirements:

  • Must be a student at the College of Wooster
  • Must maintain a cumulative 3.0 GPA and have received a B or higher in the course(s) that you are interested in tutoring in and/or have demonstrable expertise with the language as measured by a language proficiency exam, work experience, or department recommendation.
  • Excellent communication skills; able to relate well to faculty, staff, students, and administration.
  • Intercultural communication skills and experience in working with individuals from a variety of backgrounds.
  • Good judgment; common sense; a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to act to solve a problem
  • Ability to understand and follow written and oral requests
  • Pay attention to details
  • Creativity, ways to improve study sessions and make them as effective as possible.
  • Ability to adapt to a changing work environment; locate different study areas
  • Well-organized, takes initiative, self-starter, capable of working independently
  • Dependable, flexible and able to deal with last minute changes
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality

Working Conditions/Job Hazards: 

  • The appropriate work environment for discussing confidential or personal academic standing
  • Structured material to process and discuss based on scheduled sessions; one hour and half-hour slots available to meet with the tutor
  • Outdoor exposure to weather conditions when meeting up at a designated location for peer tutor session
