They also provide a way to promote student-teacher and student-student interaction, even with large classes.<\/p>\n<h4>What is formative assessment?<\/h4>\n<div style=\"padding-left: 30px\">Refer to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmu.edu\/teaching\/assessment\/basics\/formative-summative.html\">Carnegie Mellon University&#8217;s Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence &amp; Educational Innovation<\/a>.<\/div>\n<div>The goal of formative assessment is to\u00a0<em>monitor student learning<\/em>\u00a0to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by instructors to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning.<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>Poll students for an answer to a question and display the answer distribution as a graph.<\/li>\n<li>Encourage student engagement with questions during\u00a0a lecture.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Example Tools<\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"lipsum\">Post-its<\/h3>\n<ol>\n<li>Write on\u00a0post-it notes.<\/li>\n<li>Use the <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/post-it-plus\/id920127738?mt=8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Post-it Plus<\/a> app (iOS) to capture a photo of the notes.<\/li>\n<li>Use the app to arrange, edit, and share digital note boards.
