Interested in human perception and the working of the mind, Petra Soesemann creates work that is fundamentally concerned with the manipulation of the formal qualities of art (color, texture, form, structure, pattern, geometry, and rhythm, among other factors). She watches for the ways these come together in what she calls “the visual event,” a moment when the formal qualities of a work converge in a way that seems almost magical to hold the viewer’s attention without being predictable.
Soesemann lives and works in Wooster, Ohio, after teaching and serving as the chair of the foundation department at the Cleveland Institute of Art.
