Printing for Faculty and Staff

These steps add campus printers to a College Mac or Windows computer. You only need to do this once per computer.

At a Glance

  • Queue names look like MGN-416-BW-RELEASE: building code, room number, color mode, then DIRECT or RELEASE.
  • DIRECT prints immediately and charges your default department. RELEASE holds the job until you scan your ID at the device and choose a cost center.
  • Mac: install the PaperCut client, sign in, then add your printers.
  • Windows: browse to the papercut-2022 server and double click the queues you need.

How Printer Names Work

Queues are named after their location. The format is:
BUILDING CODE – ROOM NUMBER – BW or COLOR – DIRECT or RELEASE
For example, MGN-416-BW-RELEASE is the black and white release queue for Morgan Hall room 416.

Search the printer list for your building code and room number. There is no queue called BW-DIRECT or COLOR-RELEASE on its own. Those are the last part of a name, not a name.

Choosing the Right Queue

Most locations offer four queues. Two of the differences affect how your printing is charged.

DIRECT and RELEASE

DIRECTPrints immediately. The job is charged to your default department.
RELEASEHeld in the queue until you go to the device, scan your ID, choose a cost center, and release it.

Use a RELEASE queue in two situations: when the printing needs to be charged to something other than your primary department, or when the document is sensitive and should not sit in the output tray waiting to be picked up.

BW and COLOR

BWEverything prints in greyscale. Color is not possible on this queue.
COLORColor is available. Uses page level detection, so only pages that actually contain color are charged at the color rate.

The FindMe Queues

Two queues do not follow the building and room format: FS-BW-FINDME and FS-COLOR-FINDME. These are for convenient printing when you are away from your normal device, and let you release the job at whichever device you walk up to.

The tradeoff is that FindMe queues do not offer finishing options. If you need stapling, sorting, or folding, use the queue for a specific device instead.
