About Campus Climate Notifications

The College of Wooster is committed to the health, safety and wellness of our students. Our community is built on the central expectation that students treat one another with respect, both in the classroom and in their social and personal lives. The College releases summary reports of incidents that happen in the campus community on the first business day of each month of the academic year; reports include statistics for the prior month. At the end of each semester, a comprehensive update will be provided to the campus community.

The notifications provide information about a variety of reports received by College staff including, but not limited to: assault, discrimination, harassment, medical assistance amnesty, and sexual misconduct.

Please note that the content found in this report may include information that may be upsetting to some individuals. Support resources are available and use of them is encouraged.

It is important to note how locations are identified by the College. Descriptions of locations include:

  • On-campus: an incident has been reported to have occurred on property owned or controlled by the College.
  • Off-campus College Programs: an incident has been reported to have occurred in the context of College employment, educational programs or activities, including but not limited to Wooster study abroad programs, Wooster internship programs, trips/retreats organized by Wooster.
  • Off-campus: an incident has been reported to have occurred in a property not controlled by the College and has adverse, on-going effects that create a hostile environment for any member of the Wooster community at or on College of Wooster property.

Please note that this report is not all-inclusive of campus crime. That information is available in the Annual Security Report (ASR) released each year in October for the prior calendar year. Please note that Campus Climate Notifications will not replace timely warnings which will be made if there is a threat of ongoing harm to the campus community. It is not possible to opt of receipt of timely warnings which are required by federal legislation.

Investigations that may be compromised by the release of information through a Campus Climate Notification will not be included in this reporting until appropriate. In addition, if a complainant or respondent in a sexual misconduct case asks that information be withheld from the monthly report, that request will be honored. (If, for example, there is only one report for the month, an individual may be identifiable.) However, all reports will be included in the semester summary.

Categories of Campus Climate Issues to be Reported

Assault

The College places a high value on the sanctity of the individual. It will not tolerate behavior which in any way undermines the emotional, physical, or ethical integrity of any member of our campus community. Students who have experienced a physical assault should seek medical attention immediately. Services through the Longbrake Student Wellness Center are available 24 hours a day while classes are in session. If a member of the campus community is concerned for their on-going safety, they should contact Security and Protective Services to file a report. When appropriate, a No Contact Order may be issued.|

Discrimination and/or Harassment

The College of Wooster condemns and will not tolerate discriminatory harassment against any employee, student, visitor, or guest on the basis of any status protected by College policy or law. Those include race, color, sex/gender, gender identity, gender expression, pregnancy, political affiliation, religion, creed, ethnicity, national origin (including ancestry), citizenship status, physical or mental disability of a qualified individual, age, marital status, family responsibilities, sexual orientation, veteran or military status (including special disabled veteran, Vietnam-era veteran, or recently separated veteran), predisposing genetic characteristics, domestic violence victim status, or any other protected category under applicable local, state, or federal law, including protections for those opposing discrimination or participating in any complaint process on campus or within the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission or other human rights agencies.

Sexual Misconduct

Sexual misconduct encompasses any unwelcome behavior of a sexual nature that is committed without consent or by force, intimidation, coercion, or manipulation. Sexual misconduct can be committed by a person of any gender, and it can occur between people of the same or different gender. Sexual misconduct may vary in its severity and consists of a range of behavior or attempted behavior. It can occur between strangers or acquaintances, including people involved in an intimate or sexual relationship. Sexual misconduct is an umbrella term that covers gender discrimination, sexual exploitation, sexual harassment, non-consensual intercourse or touching, stalking, intimate partner violence/domestic violence, bullying and cyber-bullying, retaliation, and hazing.

Medical Assistance Amnesty

There are times when a student may consume alcohol to a level of extreme intoxication, or a student may have a medical emergency following the use of drugs and/or alcohol. The College considers the safety, health, and well-being of students paramount to documenting students for minor violations of the code of student conduct. Signs of a medical emergency may include, but are not limited to: vomiting, loss of coordination or balance, loss of consciousness, and/or bouts of unresponsiveness. Students who are concerned for the safety of themselves or their friends should seek medical assistance from the Longbrake Student Wellness Center or from Campus Safety (CS).
