Kappa of Ohio

In September of 1925, the Wooster Voice newspaper proclaimed the formation of a Phi Beta Kappa Chapter at the college.  Wooster had now entered “the circle of the elite.”  The College’s chapter, christened “Kappa of Ohio,” was only the tenth Chapter established in this state.  Its early leadership included members who are now legendary figures in Wooster’s past: Professors Kelso (Greek), Notestein (Latin), Compton (Philosophy), Mateer (Biology), and Gingrich (German).  At the first initiation, many alumni members and six seniors were elected.

The Kappa of Ohio chapter of Phi Beta Kappa contributes to the intellectual life of the College of Wooster in many ways.  Since 1930 the Chapter has sponsored visiting lecturers and now participates in the Visiting Scholars program.  Our Chapter members are listed on our Membership page.

Phi Beta Kappa Prize

Since 1976, the Chapter has awarded a Phi Beta Kappa Prize given to the junior initiate who has demonstrated concern for the quality of life on campus, leadership ability, and a broad range of course work.  The 2023 prize is given to Zoe Elisabeth YiLing Seymore. Visit our Prize page for biographies and a list of past recipients.
