Machinima

Viewer Discretion is Advised

Machinima is the use of real-time computer graphics engines to create cinematic productions. Real-time interactive 3D engines are used instead of professional animation software. Most often, video games are used to create computer generated animations. Production tends to be cheaper as creators use game tools or modifications to create their works.

Uses in a Course

  • Machinima content can be an immersive experience with users entering or visiting 3D representations of historical sites, events, or people.
  • Generate simulations or “What if” scenarios
  • Students see realistic 3D representations of events, technology, or social situations

How can I make one?

You will need:

  • A game and gaming console (or gaming computer)
  • Screen capturing software or mod in a game
  • A script or scenario to record
  • Video editing software
  • Optional: Voice actors, audio sound track, extra graphics

If you want to create content from scratch, you can use stand alone tools for animation.

  • Source Filmmaker is a professional grade software used by big studios like DreamWorks and Pixar. The engine produces high quality clips, but is also for advanced users.
  • Unreal Engine 4 is a game engine with built in cinematic tools. It is also for advanced users and noted to not be as user friendly as Source Filmmaker.

Things to Consider Before Use

  • Creating Machinimas is a time consuming and laborious process.
  • There is a big learning curb in using stand alone animation tools.
  • Mods in games are created by fan and enthusiasts not experts, take caution when downloading these packages as they can contain malware and viruses.
  • Mods can break and can cause you to lose your game data.
