Faculty Call for Spring SOREP Applications

The Sophomore Research Program (SOREP) allows faculty to hire a student who is in their second year at the College or in the second semester of their first year for 3-10 hours per week (hours can also be split between students, if desired). Many students find SRA work helpful training for their own research, as well as valuable experience to put on their resumes.

The deadline for faculty to request a Research Assistant for Spring 2026 is Friday, November 14th

Please note: the application will ask for Total Hours requested. If you plan to hire more than one student, please add their expected hours together for this field.

The types of tasks an SRA can perform are varied, but can include:

  • Performing a literature search and gathering research materials
  • Lab assistance
  • Conducting structured interviews
  • Transcribing or editing interviews
  • Coding and/or analyzing data for themes
  • Fact-checking and assistance with proofreading a manuscript
  • Formatting citations for an article
  • Organizing a folder of PDFs into a library in Zotero
  • Creating presentation slides and posters on faculty research (via PowerPoint or other programs)
  • Assistance with setting up a WordPress professional website

We encourage you to consider hiring students through an open call or splitting hours between an experienced and newer SRA to give more opportunities to a broader range of students. To this end, there is a question on the application asking that faculty who have already identified a student to explain that choice.

Position approvals will be sent to Faculty on Tuesday, November 18 with more information about hiring student researchers. A message will go out to all eligible students on Tuesday, November 25 directing them to all positions with an open call for applications.

Additional information on the Program can be found on the Academic Affairs website.

For students who are ineligible to work at the College (e.g., because of visa restrictions) or if they need additional credits toward graduation requirements, they may be able to earn course credit for work as a SRA (please reach out to the Dean for Faculty Development if you know a situation where this could be beneficial for a student).

Please consider applying and let me (ssobeck@wooster.edu) or Morgan Lee-Barton (mlee-barton@wooster.edu) know if you have any questions.
