On campus employment is permitted for students who are maintaining their F-1 visa status. On campus employment is the only employment option available to first year students. Off campus employment through CPT and OPT can be authorized once eligible (see links for more information).
Hours
Per F-1 visa regulations, students may not work more than 20 hours per week while school is in session.
F-1 visa holders are only eligible to work up to 40 hours when the entire work week does not include instructional days. Instructional days are days with classes or exam periods.
Students must pay special attention to the limits placed on hours worked. This is the student’s responsibility. Pay periods run from Sunday through Saturday. Employment violations are subject to SEVIS record termination. Applications for reinstatement are not allowed for employment violations.
Finding a Job
Student Employment has a comprehensive website for students to review. Their Frequently Asked Questions page is very helpful too. In general, students apply for jobs via Handshake.
ISS assists international students in acquiring a Social Security Number once they are hired.
Getting Paid
The pay rate for student jobs is $10.70 per hour (Ohio minimum wage).
Students are paid on a biweekly basis on Friday, and funds are directly deposited by the Payroll Office into their local bank accounts. If requested, earnings can be applied directly to a student’s college tuition balance.
Unlike scholarships and grants, campus employment allocations do not reduce the amount that students must pay the College for tuition, room and board. Most students will use the money earned for personal expenses.
