Update as of February 25, 2025
As students begin to make travel plans, here are some things to consider.
Should you travel outside the U.S.?
It is hard to make any guarantees regarding reentry into the US. We encourage you to do your research before making a decision to travel. Please keep in mind that sudden changes are possible.
Currently, there are no travel restrictions (travel bans), although the current administration has set up a 60-day review process to identify countries that may be subject to a later travel ban. Based on that timeline, this review process ends around March 21st, which is during Wooster’s Spring Break.
If you need to travel, do your homework before you depart: gather your documents (see below); understand the process if you need to renew your visa; be aware of previous travel bans; and ask questions. Give yourself more time before flights to get through customs and immigration. Keep additional copies of your documents on your phone and email them to yourself in case they are lost.
Travel Documentation
Here are the documents we recommend carrying when traveling:
- I-94 https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/home select “Get most recent I-94” and enter your passport information. Then print out the final document.
- I-20 Travel signature (on page-2) is valid for one-year (6-months for OPT and STEM).
- Passport Your passport must be valid for 6 months into the future from the date you are entering the U.S..
- Valid Visa It is only necessary to have a valid visa if you plan to leave the country. Visas can only be renewed while outside the U.S.. If your visa is expired, review the process for renewal, and then determine if this is the right time to travel. Visa processing times are unpredictable and may increase under the new administration.
- Copy of Transcript (proof of student status) You can print out an unofficial transcript through Self Service (located under “Academics”). You could also print out a copy of your current or next semester class schedule.
- Proof of Financial Support This can include bank statements, scholarship letters, or receipt of payment from the Student Accounts Office.
