Atomu Maruyama – STA Reflection – ’26

My goal for this year was to learn compositing using Adobe After Effects, with a specific focus on creating a 2D visual style from 3D rendered images.

Throughout the semester, I actively practiced compositing workflows by integrating my 3D renders into After Effects and experimenting with color grading, lighting adjustments, and layering techniques. I focused especially on techniques that flatten depth cues, such as reducing contrast, controlling shadows, and applying stylized effects to achieve a more 2D aesthetic. I completed multiple compositing tests and incorporated these techniques into my animation and visual projects. I also met key deadlines for project submissions, which helped me stay consistent and accountable.

I built a solid foundation in compositing and developed a clearer understanding of how to achieve a 2D look from 3D renders. Moving forward, I plan to continue refining these techniques, with a stronger focus on stylistic consistency.
