In Small Teaching, author James Lang recommends strategies such as “Retrieving.” Lang clarifies, “if you want to retrieve knowledge from your memory, you have to practice retrieving knowledge from your memory” (Lang, 2016, p. 20).
Instead of using quizzes as strictly assessment activities, consider them as a method for your students to practice knowledge retrieval.

By using AI, you can potentially save yourself a significant amount of time while providing students with a better experience. Come and learn how you can:
- generate scads of practice questions with feedback formatted for import into Moodle in a matter of minutes
- use AI to help you setup your gradebook no matter how complex your grading scheme might be
- explore ways you can use AI to brainstorm assignments and activities that will check student mastery of course learning goals
Grading Approaches
- Tuesday, August 13th, 10-11:30AM
- Kauke Hall Room 135
- Register for the event today!
By using graded activities such as assignments and quizzes in Moodle, you can leverage features that help you and your students monitor their progress through the course. Graded activities also populate the Moodle grade book. Join us to familiarize yourself and ask questions about aggregation methods, scoring, and more. Whether you use a more “traditional” or an “alternative” approach to grading, we will have time for questions and to setup your grade book for the semester.
See our Grade book topic for more details by self-enrolling in the Moodle Professional Development course (hosted in Training.wooster)
- Overview of some progress monitoring features
- “Grade to pass” set on individual activities
- Activity Completion
- Grade book setup
- “What is my aggregation method?”
- Create grade book categories (we recommend everyone create categories regardless of approach)
- Guided workshop time to setup grade book in two groups:
- Group A: “Traditional”
- Group B: “Alternative” grading options (contract or specs grading, etc.)
