Sammy – STA Reflection ’26

I have learned a variety of skills on image production during my position as a Student Technology Assistant. I have learned how to take better photos, color grade, use artificial lens blur, and more using Adobe Lightroom. If you want to learn more about using Lightroom, checkout my Quick Tip!

My primary goal for this year was to improve my Adobe Lightroom skills, and my progression from the beginning of the year until now shows significant improvement and familiarity with the software. My goal in the first semester was to have a baseline knowledge on lightroom by taking pictures from the internet and editing them in the style of popular media. This semester, I wanted to deepen my understanding of image production as a whole by using my own photos instead of ones on the internet. As photos on the internet are often professionally taken and very well framed, it was much easier to edit them into something beautiful. When using my own photos, it was much more challenging as I had to cover the mistakes I made as a photographer as well as adding something to the image with Lightroom.

Here is the before and after of the first and last image I produced:

Before:

Dull before picture of a snowy sunset at Wooster.

After:

Vibrant and beautiful darkened picture of snowy sunset with exaggerated oranges and purples.

Last picture before:

Bright daytime picture of a field with a bench and tree.

After:

Yellow and ethereal daytime picture of a field with a bench and tree with lens blur to bring out the bench.

Other than Lightroom, I also created a self-portfolio using Figma. I was already somewhat familiar with Figma and having a professional portfolio would help with my career in the future. In the second semester, I moved away from that and focused more on my image production.
