STA Reflection ’21- Aubry

Being a Student Technology Assistant is one of my favorite jobs I’ve ever had.

I’ve learned so much about various software programs throughout my time as an STA and also troubleshooting student’s technology issues. Whether it be helping students with Microsoft Word or hosting workshops, I enjoy assisting students and learning more about technologies and techniques along the way.

I have learned the fundamentals of Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom, and Illustrator to host workshops. Learning Adobe Illustrator has sparked my interest in graphic design and given me the confidence that I can be proficient in industry-standard software through self-teaching. I am glad to be able to create graphic illustrations through this program that provides endless creative possibilities. Developing software skills such as these to share with other students is one of the most fulfilling parts of being an STA.

I initially wanted to be an STA because I am curious about the technology industry and desired to find ways to be involved in it. I had my doubts on whether the various programs and media software I had learned throughout the years such as Microsoft Suite and iMovie would be enough for me to begin this job. Thankfully, I have learned that having the passion to learn software and doing my best to solve a technology issue is the most important.

One of my favorite things about being an STA is the community. I love getting to know my colleagues and collaborating on STA projects together. The entire Educational Technology staff are extremely supportive and want each STA to get the most out of this position. It’s nice to be part of another small and friendly community here on campus.

I’d encourage any student who is self-motivated and has a passion for technology and educating others on the subject to apply to this job. Helping other students with their inquiries and technology issues and solving them is the main part of the position, but it is also one of the best parts. Having patience for yourself and others when you don’t solve a problem initially is essential for this job. Lastly, even if a student feels that they lack some technology skills, I’d still encourage them to apply as the STA team is there to grow with you.
